Avengers: Secret Wars. In theaters May 2027.

Joe and Anthony Russo haven’t finished their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet. Marvel Studios announced at its San Diego Comic-Con that the Russos would come out of short superhero-movie retirement to direct back-to-back Avengers movies: Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, which arrives a year later on May 7, 2027.

Will Robert owney Jr. play an Iron-Man or Doctor Doom variant? Will we see another Victor von Doom cast later? How do you feel about the reveal?

The revelation that Avengers 5 (previously known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) is now known as Avengers: Doomsday is certainly a big hint about who’s going to be the villain in that film: Doctor Doom. And the actor who will be portraying Doom is none other than Robert Downey, Jr. himself. Yep, Iron Man is getting back into a metal suit.

“New mask, same task,” Downey said at Marvel’s Hall H panel on Saturday.

We always knew Marvel Studios' return to Hall H at Comic-Con this year was going to be big, but it would be safe to say nobody had a Robert Downey Jr. MCU return on their bingo cards.

And yet, that's exactly what we got with Kevin Feige and co's mic drop of a closing panel reveal. As Harvey Dent once said, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." And in Iron Man actor Downey Jr.'s case, he'll have done both when he takes to our screens as Doctor Doom in The Russo Brothers' newly titled Avengers: Doomsday (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) and the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.

But Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige also offered a hint about who else is going to appear in those Avengers movies. The casts of Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps will all appear in the Avengers sequels, Feige said.

For now, details on what exactly Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will entail and what the Russos and RDJ have in store for us are firmly under wraps.
