The Huns Used a Grotesque Practice to Unify Their People ☠️ Riddle Of The Roman Skulls | Smithsonian

The Huns had been practicing elongation of children’s skulls for years, as a way to unify their people. They also required those they conquered, including the crumbling Roman Empire, to do the same to their children–and many complied.

The Huns have always fascinated me, and their weaponry was so advanced that the Romans and even Germanic people had a big problem with. Until they joined up and took down the Empire of course .. You don’t see enough history on them as you would think.., Thank you for sharing

Amusing how the rationale of showing common origin was immediately undermined by other conquered peoples adopting the practice, in a <4-minute video :)

Interesting, but "grotesque"? "Extreme"? Cranial modification is a widespread practice throughout history. It's being done now, even in America. That kind of hysterical click bait nonsense is beneath the Smithsonian.

Was there proof that food was the reason for Huns unifying with other tribes against the Romans and also the cranial modification was it done out of fear or admiration by these tribes? Hun's special breed of war horses are sure evidence of their prowess.

This does not explain how their heads were modified. I'd be very interested to know what they did to change the shape of their heads.

It didn't effect the brain in a negative way. It made them look more fierce. How frightening would it of been to see thousands of Barbarian looking Worfs(Star Trek character) charging your legion.

The heretic pharoah Ahkenaten had an elongated skull and ruled Egypt at the end of the 17th Dynasty. Shortly after his death, two significant events occurred; The cataclysmic eruption of the Thera volcano and the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt. The first ruler of the 18th Dynasty was Ahmose I. What happened to the Hyksos? They went to Canaan.

The dates for all of this was approximately 1670-1625 BCE.

So they liberated them from Rome's control. Surely, Rome knew they were losing them and no way they didnt fight to keep them. If so, there had to had been a section within that group that sees themselves as Roman and not just follow the Huns tradition. Unless, they saw Rome as a monster and the Huns were a better ruler.

To call this "a Grotesque Practice" comes across as judgmental and feels like a cultural shaming of tribal markers that people would have worn with pride.
Even today...infant's skulls get warped or flattened on one side _all the time_ -- simply due to the weight of their own heads as they favour certain positions while laying down.
That demonstrates how little it takes to do this intentionally and also highlights the fact that it doesn't harm the brain or anything.

Something *truly* grotesque and harmful to society would be cultural prejudices in academia when speaking from a voice of authority.
