This is the next video in the series about the Stanley metallic bench plane type study. This is the short version, intended primarily to help you determine the type of your bench plane with two patent dates in the bed behind the frog.

Introducing “Type 9A” into the Stanley Type Study lexicon. The Type 9A bridged the gap between the Type 9 and the Type 10, especially for the plane sizes larger than the No4.

Questions/comments always welcome, whether here or on the Just Plane Fun Facebook page. Thanks for watching!

Hi MJ, Thanks for this very helpful video. I recently picked up a 4 1/2 that would definitely be a type 9A - exactly as you describe it has no frog screw but also has the enlarged rib.

Great video, just answered my question on my 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 type 9A. Thought they were type 10.

Thanks. Easy to follow. The type 10 iron logo is my favorite design. I’m looking forward to the next video.

Thank you for all the information, actually seeing an example is much more help than just reading about type studies. On my No. 4 type 9 plane there is also another number above the two date codes 457, it's smaller and cast into rather than raised in the cast. I've never seen any reference to this number, just wondered if it means anything that you know about. Thanks again for the great videos.

I have a t9 No 5 that I suspect as having a replaced knob. It is correct in that it's the low knob, but mine has a "bead" or rounded groove on the bottom. Is this just a carry over like you stated. Or did someone take a knob off of another type? Everything else is correct, that knob bothers me however.
