The Pilbara region is the oldest craton in Australia and the first place where valuable minerals and base metals were accreted into the crust. In this video we look at the geological formation of the Pilbara Craton and the many geological landforms that exist, as well as pinpointing when mineralization events occurred as well as highlighting which minerals were deposited throughout the 3.6 billion years that this craton has been evolving.

Lastly we look at the gold rushes that occurred in the Pilbara region, as well as the present day gold mining that has taken place, as well as covering the recent 2020 discovery of the enriched Hemi gold deposit.

Thanks for the memories. I worked as an exploration geologist in the Pilbara region of WA, and also the Eastern Goldfields, from the early 1970's to 1985, before going to Indonesia. Also did some work in the Ashburton Valley (climbed Mt Augustus twice) and been to the Nabberu Basin and worked around the Shoemaker Crater before it was so named and recognised. Great times

It's hard to comprehend hearing about ages rocks and geologic activity that happened billions of years ago... I am always amazed at just how old Australia is... on top of that, given that much time many other activities with folding and sedimentation complete altering bedrock again... how anyone can decipher this tangled complexity has my attention... love hearing the history and seeing great graphics... awesome job...

……spent a week touring the Pilbara. I loved it! Seeing all the ancient geological features’ was mind blowing. Standing on an uplifted rock in Karijini N P, which had ancient sea wave ripples on top of it, WOW! The overwhelming factor for me, it was difficult to grasp just how OLD this land is! Absolutely wonderful!

I work in the Pilbara on Iron Ore mines. Currently central Pilbara. I get to go into the pits and have access to massive cuts through geologic history. If you're interested in pics of interesting formations, I'd love to know where to post them.

Once found a very rare specimen of parasitic folding just out from Paraburdoo. The left hand side had a fold that curved towards the middle of the rock to join with the fold from the right then to curve back towards the side again. All highly polishable bif with jasperlite and hematite in it and unfortunately that outcrop most likely buried in a waste dump from Channar mining area. Was on a little hill south east of the detrital area 64 east and hope one day to return there and try and locate that spot again as have lost all the pieces cut with diamond saw. One piece dropped into a Perth shop to polish sold without my permission and another piece gave to a geologist worked with and would not even like to guess how much would get as a collectors item but such the case with prospecting when the finder of important specimens or deposits not always prosper from the find.

Mate thanks heaps loads of cool info here ive been mining in the pilbara for 9 years now at a minesite im currently at around 100m below sea level in the rock wall batter you can see mud bubbles or what could have been stuff falling out of the sky from 3 billion years ago its on the same angel as the batter/ wall but to know it was once flat blows my mind.
