Damn what a bad ass concept. But after you explain how tedious and dangerous the process is, I see why I never heard about this before.

In thermodynamics, superheating (sometimes referred to as boiling retardation, or boiling delay) is the phenomenon in which a liquid is heated to a temperature higher than its boiling point, without boiling.

“Sir if the point of the battle is to put these FLAMING BALLS OF METAL HELL into the enemy ship, then WHY ARE WE MAKING THEM INSIDE OUR OWN SHIP!?”

I ❤ have it red hot.... It was state of the art in artillery during Napoleon era. I was quite popular : they had enough time to cook that piece of gear. Not such a fuss. Pros being pros. They were going after the powder shelters or sails, wood and munitions deposits.
In France, we still use the expression "Tirer à boulet rouge (sur quelqu'un)" litteraly "Fire at someone with a red hot Canon ball"... Just what you think : going hard on someone.
Still in use today in the Navy : all hands on board are trained to put out red hot munitions or parts of munitions of incoming fire or due to yours going off. Its basic training.
That's how you set on fire almost everything since the Antiquity. Not much flame arrows but metal spikes red hot. Siege towers, siege ramps, ram roofs, etc. Besieged cities. Scorpions were used to pin red hot metal spike on the coming close tower siege.
It would set things on fire by induction.

Looks like they might have been the precursor of incendiary ammo

If you really wanted to get spicy, molten shot was also a round used in the age of sail. Basically a hot shot with Liquid Metal in the middle. Like a hellish gusher

Hot shot was famously used by the French at the battle of Yorktown against British warships.
