Joey i love this eel but i absolutely suggest giving it a large piece of cover in the centre to act as a bridge of shade if he wants to go from one side of the tank to the other without stress

Damn…looks like he needs a bigger tank already, he’s massive.

I had 2 of these back in 98-99 when I lived in Venezuela. The bigger of the 2 was about the size of this one. I was shocked by the smaller eel and it felt like 110v, but one day I was cleaning the tank and had my arm fully submerged up to my shoulder. I would keep my eye on them, they would mostly sit on the bottom and come up for air once in a while, but I didn't notice the big 1 swim straight up and across and touched my upper arm. I open my eyes and was on the ground about 3ft away from the tank. Not alot of time passed, but I just had no idea how I got on the ground. Be careful with that. They turn pale white sometimes, kinda freaky, something to do with charging or discharging or something.

A very small tank for it's size. Stressful life for it. Still alive?

Should add a piece of drift wood, would look nice and give off tannins for the eel.

Need to add a lot of pipe work, or equivalent to make it feel secure. Far too open a tank. You understand stress levels. Brave move, I admire it - but meet it’s needs. (Experienced public aquaria manager before you jump on.)

Would probably be a better fit if you did a black water tank considering the natural habitat.

Awesome and daring but still very cool. Only one suggestion I have, and I
might be wrong on this, but is your tank frame made of metal ? If it is so
than you might want to think about properly grounding it.

I had one of these for several years. They’re actually very laid back and easy to care for animals. I really regret that I had to give mine up when I went back to college. I’d love to have another one day.

He really needs to add tannin to the water to make the fish more comfortable. They don’t like bright light or a lack of cover.

this is insane its so cool to see it swim in clear water, i never realised how active they actually are

Might be a cool idea, a room with a tank that runs all around the perimeter of the room. The fish would have loads of room to swim around then.

I had a juvenile size electric eel in the late 80’s with (2) Brazilian Redtail Catfish in a 500 tank that all got along well. The cat fishes got zapped once and never bothered the eel. I ended up giving the cat fishes to the national aquatic center due to their massive sizes.

Not endangered - A captive in a tiny tank. If you truly care, set it free.
Back into the life it had before becoming a prisoner.

Was not expecting a electric eel, thought you would go for a fire eel or even a group of tire track eels. Sparky is my nomination for a name. Super cool fish. Thanks for sharing.

Me: 'Don't worry, Honey. I would never think of getting an electric eel.'
Me 20 seconds later: I kinda want one... 😆

In Brazil we call it ‘poraquê’. It can weight up to 44 pounds.

Cant help feeling sorry for these creatures. They are stressed by being caught, put in a bag and shipped, only to find themselves imprisoned once more for life. I often wonder if humans ever put themselves in the place of the animals they cage-obviously not. Will humans ever evolve to treat animals as beings deserving of respect and compassion?

How do you plan to feed it? If it was caught in the wild, must be difficult to feed frozen.
