One of the most unforgettable final scenes in cinema history. Memories of Murder, a movie about unsolved murders in South Korea in the 80s, ends with the detective looking at the camera. Director Bong Joon-ho thought that the real-life killer who was never caught might watch the movie, and designed this ending so that the killer would make eye contact with the detective.

Fun fact: the real killer, Lee Chun Jae, murdered 15 women between 1986 and 1994, but he was not caught for this. In 1994, he was caught, however, after drugging, raping and murdering his wife’s sister, and sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. Which is why it became nearly impossible for the police to find him, as he was in prison. They finally caught him in 2019 when one of the detectives requested another DNA test on one of the victim’s underwear from 33 years ago. However, the statute of limitations had expired by that time and they could not prosecute him for his past murders. He also confessed that during 1986-1994, he not only murdered a total 14 women, but also raped over 30 women.

Voice of a Murderer, The Chaser, Children are some of the most gut wrenching korean movies based on true life events.

He confessed because someone confessed to one of his murders and what's funny is some scenes later matched with what really happened where the director didn't even know about it. Just search for the real murder w/ the memories of murder

My first introduction to Korean films back in college almost 18 years now. The plot, the cinematography and the acting was above most films I had seen. After this I started looking up all the international films and titles. Found Kurosawa, Andrei and so many geniuses.

What i liked about the movie is it's perfect in an imperfect way . There's a sort of sadness and somber feeling to it . Its such a vibe

They are talking about Lee Chun Jae. He probably didn’t see the film, unless there was TV in jail, cause he was apprehended in 1994 for a different murder case. This movie was released in 2003.

90s and 2000 Korean movies were good no over make up, natural face, no plastic surgery. Some actors used to have beard and men were looking manly. But now everything is totally opposite tons of make up.
