It's very destructive to beeing forced by society to do things that is not really important. I was a happy young man spending time with doing school, biking, fishing, playing computer games and beeing with friends/family. Then society forced me doing military service. I tried doing it to something I wanted, but when my healthy body become unhealthy of the service I even became depressed. I was forced and had only 2-3 ways to solve it. I was going to loose regardless of way I choosed. The best solution is probably protecting values before a situation.

you are right about many things. the problem is that as you said everyone's definition of success is at least a little bit different. and its very hard to find someone with exactly the same values and wants all at same level of importance as the other person. Sometimes compromise is unavoidable, either that or each person going their separate ways
