Hollywood Encouraged The Spanking and Abuse of Women Onscreen

Hollywood studios reinforced the idea that spankings were a healthy part of a woman’s life. It's a powerful reflection of social learning theory and the cycle of abuse. How people grow up seeing such things and then equate love with violence. This is awful. Especially seeing them all in a row. Audrey's retort to Cary Grant was a beauty, though!

That's how some of us first realized our own kink 😊

My girlfriend actually encourages it… mind you it’s in private and consensual. I’m not sure how she would go doing in public…having said that I used to get flogged with a bamboo cane in high school can’t say I liked it.

Hollywood merely portrayed the reality at the time. It didn’t encourage anything. Hollywood is above all else a business so it needs to make money by making movies relevant to current cultural views and events

To be fair in the movie Too Young to Kiss the character June Allyson was playing had fooled everyone into believing she was an 11 year old girl.

Contrary to what this video would have you believe, spanking was a rarity on screen. There's a reason this clip is less than 4 mins long. Yes, it happened now and again but you could go see hundreds of movies in the golden age of Hollywood and never see it at all.

I noticed this in two older movies & I was curious to see if this was a common thing amongst couples 😂 good way to start off a trip to the bedroom

Up until approximately the 1970’s, the spanking and humiliation
of adult women was considered a cute, romantic and generally acceptable
trope. In order to justify the chastisement the female character needed
to be presented as spoiled, uppity, childish and/or reckless. It was
assumed that most of the audience would agree that the bratty female
needed to be put in her place and reminded that men always knew best.
They also had to learn the lesson that all males were entitled to punish
all females, even those they barely knew, if they disapproved of her
behavior, ideas, activities etc.

But what about the male characters? Well, apparently after age 18 or so
there were no male brats. According to the movies men grew up, women
just got taller. But what if men did act badly? In And The Angels Sing
(1944) bandleader Fred Mac Murray steals money from a quartet of singing
sisters and their manipulative father Raymond Walburn schemes to get
them to buy him a soy farm when they want to break up their act to
pursue individual interests. Even though Mac Murray is a thief and even lectures Walburn on being a negligent father guess who gets spanked?

In Public Deb 1 (1940) George Murphy publicly spanks heiress Brenda
Joyce when she marches in a communist rally. But in Spring Madness
(1938), college boy Lew Ayres is so enamored of communism that he plans
to visit Moscow as soon as he graduates. However, Ayres, as a presumably "logical" male, is allowed to eventually see the error of his own ways without being subjected to outside discipline.

If you question the gender politics in these films you’re often told to
lighten up, give the guys a break and not be so politically correct.
Ironically, these arguments tend to come from men who become incensed at
the idea of showing sit com males as childish or inept or in need of correction by the women in their lives.

Apparently infantilizing women was fine because, you know, women have no adult
dignity to lose. To humiliate or infantilize men, however, is an insult
not to be borne! I guess it’s just a little harder to lighten up
when it’s your own gender that’s taking the heat :)

My Dad grew up in the 40's and 50's and he and I saw the end of J.Wayne's movie about Hawaii where he spanks a lady. I asked my Dad why he did that and he said it was because Wayne was weird.

'That means you love her!' how sick is that ?? A child thinking that violence equals love.

This behavior was also accepted with young boys on screen, you never hear anyone complaining about that.

What Hollywood did was produce movies and films that reflected American cultural values. I think its really stretching to say that Hollywood encouraged the "abuse of women". The reality is that until about the 1970's men and women were regarded having "places" within society. Women were expected to get married and raise children. Men were expected to work and earn a living for their families. Maybe these were not good cultural values, but they were the predominant ones at the time. Wife spanking seems strange today, but when done in a jocular way seemed amusing to plenty of both men and women from that era. Very few of the spankings I've seen on film seemed to be done to be painful or hurt a woman. They were about shock and surprise and---letting the woman know she had transgressed certain limits. Cultural values change. Periodically, they need to be reexamined. But I do not care for those who insist on judging everything that occurred in the past through the lense of today. Times were different. These movies are a good window into those differences.

I wouldn't complain if Clark Gable did that to me tbh. 🤣😂

The biggest absurd is how we pretend this wasn't put into this movies for the women's enjoyment

Seems to get good results. What has non spanking done? Nothing good.

Looking at it now it looks as if it was an acceptable metaphor for full blown sex on screen. It is however in the video clips above, not that, it is instead 'portrayed' as non-consensual and is therefore abuse.
