How to Control 300 Million Minds: The Mysterious TV Psychic Who Tried to Save the Soviet Union

“Relax. Let your thoughts wander free.”

A deep, measured, baritone reverberates through the air. The voice belongs to Anatoly Kashpirovsky, a man seated behind a simple desk in a dimly lit studio.

Dressed in black, his piercing gaze fixes on the camera, seemingly penetrating the television screens of 300 million viewers across the Soviet Union.

It is October 8, 1989. As night falls over Moscow, the streets empty. Inside cramped Soviet apartments, families huddle in the pale glow of their televisions as the evening news fades to silence.

In its place appears a haunting image: a misty, desolate lake, accompanied by gentle guitar strings as white letters materialize on screen: Health Séance of Doctor-Psychotherapist Anatoly Mikhailovich Kashpirovsky.

The camera trembles slightly, zooming closer to Kashpirovsky’s unblinking eyes. His voice, hypnotic yet commanding, continues: “Look around your space. There should be no sharp objects, no fire. Sit in a stable position.”

I remember when Uri Geller was in his prime, my Nan who was the most rational, down to earth person you could meet suddenly became enamoured with his power when he did some broadcast once. He told everyone to go get a broken wristwatch from a drawer and hold it, he did his pscyhic "song and dance" routine, and my nan swears my grandad's old broken wristwatch that had been broken for 15 years after he'd died, suddenly sprang to life. I didn't believe a word of it even as a gullible teenager, Geller always looked and sounded like a fraud to me, but my alwasy so clear and rational grandma was convinced he was some sort of miracle worker.

She wouldn't have it any other way than it was Geller's powers had fixed that watch and it didn't change her in any other way. She was still sharp and rational but it taught me a lesson that even the most rational person can be taken in by cheap parlour tricks or convinced of psychic powers when it was more likely they did something to make something happen. I've been an ardant skeptic of paranormal phenomena ever since I saw one of the most logical and rational people I knew get suckered into parlour tricks.

Our phones keep us hypnotized for sure, and it definitely benefits the government, to persuade if you will, our sense and sensibility

That woman's strength to endure that amount of pain for so long during her surgery is/was greater than any "mind control."
