Fortnite honestly has probably the most interesting development journey of any game. Nobody could’ve anticipated back when it started development that it would go from a sort of survival horror shooter, to a battle royale game, to an entire platform for games, akin to Roblox. Not to mention the fact that it would permanently change the gaming industry and become the world’s most popular game for a time.

Save the world hasn't died. It regularly has around 20k players. It's just very community driven to the lack of updates. It seems like epic is intentionally pushing down and making people forget about the mode, which is sad.

0:28 it was called Project Fortress, the reason the folder was called FortressGame is because thats how Unreal Engine works, the game files will always be under the game's name + "Game" folder

I believe there are 2011/2012 builds of the game it is just those people who dont want to release it

Being a Founder account, I still play the save the world mode religiously. Sure, there was a few years of regret and not playing it, until I realized that founders accounts are worth their literal weight in Save the World gold.

Something i find fascinating the most ever since videogames started is that literally nobody developing games stopped at making advances at all, its been consant work and research back to back every year every decade until now from every game development team at the same time.

2011 feels like it was a lifetime ago but it was 13 yrs ago, but its crazy to me a lot of games started back then at the same time.

There’s an alternate reality where epic actually released it as a horror game.

I'm not even a Fortnite fan and yet I still find this video interesting. Like, I don't hate Fortnite I just never really played it. Game development in general is an interesting topic to me.

Fortnite back in its early days kinda makes me sad? Like, the lighting system and general painted cartoony look it had were all just lost from chapter 2 onward. It was such an integral style / look the game had and was a big appeal for me, this big dark cartoon-esque world. You can see it on all the different painted textures, especially on stuff like the old scar/siegebreaker. The fact they basically up and abandoned that look so swiftly just kinda makes me sad, I'd even love the old lighting system / fog in Chapter 6 because gameplay-wise I think BR is great right now. Just that it's more or less abandoning its roots.

So I've been playing for years I've played Save the World and Chapter 1 up to the new seasons besides a few. Everyone wants OG Fortnite back but it comes with its problems, the skill gap is still present they added Simple Edit to lessen it but that can only do so much. I used to play the game competitively clans and everything, but now it feels like there is no point. Builds is a nightmare to play if you run high ping, the new OG season has everyone complaining already because of how people play now vs how they played then. I like the big platform style they did it keeps the game alive and well, however people will keep complaining about it when ever they bring something old back. They brought back Chapter 2 and people complained that it was just a big AD, even though it was one of the best experiences for a lot of people in while. When they released Reload my group and I already knew how it was gonna turn out, nothing but sweats. This is the one game where skill based match making became a requirement to keep the game fair, the only people that really complain about it are unemployed or streamers. The game is gonna have problems bringing back anything OG in fact I think that the OG term has been stained pretty much. What I suggest is just revamping it to the modern mechanics and style and just tossing it on a map rotation for main battle royal.

i would probably start playing fortnite again if they re-released the original seasons completely separate from the base game, so they could have it run on the unreal engine 2017 fortnite was running on at the time. imagine how groundbreaking it would be if they brought back an original 2017-2018 build or something like that

I remember seeing the fortnite trailer while watching the spike game awards in the 2010's. Never would've thought it'd become what it did.

4:24 is wrong, 1.2 has been found ages ago. I'm assuming you think that because it's not well archived but it does exist online.

3:57 this is a fact, the game can never achieve the beautiful look again with the new graphics. I think gaming has passed its peak
