Sungji Hong - Lux Mundi for Oboe, Violin, 'Cello & Piano (2018)

Performed by Ensemble Mosaik

Program Notes: It consists of four ideas as follows: the quiet staccato on oboe, the sequences of perfect fifths on violin and violoncello, and the three-note chords with the ghostly fleeting ascending scales on piano. The whole piece develops around or between these three gestures turning on themselves or going through transformations. The pitch structure was devised to play the sequences of perfect fifths on violin’s open strings. The luminous sonority of perfect fifths gradually establishes itself as a prominent figure and later leads the piece to a dramatic climax.
The inspiration for this piece is based on the painting The Light of the World (Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, UK) by William Holman Hunt.
Lux Mundi was completed in 2018. It lasts about 9 minutes and is scored for oboe, violin, violoncello and piano. It received its first performance by Ensemble Mosaik on 21 June 2018 at the Daegu Contemporary Music Festival at Chamber Hall in Daegu, Korea.
