I was always pretty careful, but I was naive once due to my desperate need of disk space, and tried a file compressor which supposedly got hundreds of times of compression that someone had uploaded to a BBS I somewhat trusted. And it even appeared to work! Files were "compressed" into tiny versions, and then would "decompress" back into full ones. I couldn't believe it. Except then I rebooted and my MBR and partition table was apparently wiped.
