“Jesus Christ” is the third song on Brand New’s 2006 album The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me. The meditative track focuses on love, life, and the afterlife.
The song’s title is also ironic. The lyrics begin by using Jesus' name in the typical secular way, as an exclamation – “in vain.” However, it becomes clear that the narrator is truly talking to Jesus in the second verse

I was hallucinating heavily in an apartment. The air was think and everyone was fixated on the tv. I walked outside and found the grass to be the most comforting surface to bring me back down to earth.

My friend Ian asked if I wanted to drive to the gas station to get cigarettes. He put this song on.

I mean…the two contrasting thought tunnels I had were so complete.

Coming at this song as an atheist agnostic, who was raised as a southern baptist, I fucking get it. The whole dichotomy between what I was raised to believe and what I believe now is a huge deal.
