jesus christ - brand new (lyrics)

“Jesus Christ” is the third song on Brand New’s 2006 album The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me. The meditative track focuses on love, life, and the afterlife.
The song’s title is also ironic. The lyrics begin by using Jesus' name in the typical secular way, as an exclamation – “in vain.” However, it becomes clear that the narrator is truly talking to Jesus in the second verse

This song never gets old. We’re all strangers here, loving the same honest truth in this song. That says enough for me. Love yall!

"My bright's too slight to hold back all my dark."
One of the craftiest lyrics ever, along with every 'Lucero' song Ben Nichols ever wrote. Both guys are super crafty with words.

My first real relationship, he cheated on me and I slept on the couch. Phone dead, heart heavy, I just laid there with this song repeating in my head. Sometimes I listen to it just to hurt myself again.

I've always related to this song on a very very very VERY deep level. For the past year, it's been significantly more than before. The worst it's been in over 10 Been listening to this practically on repeat.

I was hallucinating heavily in an apartment. The air was think and everyone was fixated on the tv. I walked outside and found the grass to be the most comforting surface to bring me back down to earth.

My friend Ian asked if I wanted to drive to the gas station to get cigarettes. He put this song on.

I mean…the two contrasting thought tunnels I had were so complete.

One dark

One light

Did he put this song on to chill me out? Maybe. I don’t think so though. He was tripping just as hard and in his own head.

I saw this. One light one dark.

It pushed me toward something better. Still can’t explain it. Still pushing myself there.

Coming at this song as an atheist agnostic, who was raised as a southern baptist, I fucking get it. The whole dichotomy between what I was raised to believe and what I believe now is a huge deal. And then as my Catholic friends have been weighing in, telling me what I should believe has me even more twisted than ever. I think we are all fucked from the beginning based on what our parents think. And we grow and learn and figure our shit out. Those of us fucked by this song are the remnants....lol. I love you all. Hit me up if you want to talk.

I think I want this at my funeral (speaking as an ex-pastor existentialist agnostic). This is astoundingly real.
