I think what's beautiful about the song is that he doesn't glorify the town and his past. He simply recognizes it and is willing to embrace the broken people around him -- since we are all broken. He's is trying, also, to remember the good parts of that time in his life. It's a timeless song IMO -- rare these days.

Ugh, this songs makes me cry every single time. Especialy the last part:

Because I know I am probably never going home, and I will probably never see them again. It really hurts.
