I always opened them like that and my sisters thought I was crazy. But whenever I open them the right way the hole is either too small or way too big and they spill out.

Opening it this way makes it like a tissue box. You can spread the hole wider to pull out the candy, they won't fall out on their own. And also if you shake it to one side and then fold it over, it stores pretty easily.
