I always sharpen my knife on the bottom of my ashtray, which is also made of ceramic

People call it ceramic but it is actually aluminum oxide. It is only second to diamond in hardness. So plenty hard enough to scrape steel. The issue is it is not the best shape. But when it is as dull as a butter knife you can only get sharper.
