The History of Wessex

Around 495 CE, a Saxon chieftain named Cerdic arrived in Britain, and by 519 CE had established the Kingdom of the West Saxons (Wessex). During the 6th Century, his successors continued to expand against local Celtic kingdoms.

By the 7th Century, the now Christian kingdom was competing with another Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, Mercia, for supremacy. This continued during the 8th Century, as the kingdom fell under Mercian lordship several times.

Weakened by Dane raids in the 9th Century, Mercia lost supremacy to Wessex. The kingdom lead the defense of Britain as the last independent Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, under King Alfred the Great. From 902 CE, Alfred's son, Edward the Elder, would reconquer all Dane territory in Britain except York, which finally fell in 927 CE to Edward's son, Æthelstan, who became king of the English the same year.

I'm currently at 230 CE with the Asia video - still a long way to go, but making progress.

I was down in Winchester a few months back, checking out the Alfred the Great statue and the Round Table etc. It's amazing how unknown it all is to most people outside of the county. Fantastic place to go if you're into English heritage!

Hello I am from the homeland of the west Saxons Westphalia in Germany... I have been in Shaftsbury in 2018 and also in Winchester afterwards I realized it's the new home of my Saxon ancestors.... Wow.. today I'm very interested in Anglo-Saxon history.... I felt very much connected with England... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇩🇪🙏❤️

I like you're animations more than any other mapper's but try including the neighboring realms in order to identify rivalries and coalitions and such, if you could

The time before William of Normandy and after the fall of rome always gives me a headache. Thank you for breaking things down for me. At least for Wessex.

Awesome! I live in Wessex (Ringwood, Hampshire).

Places like Andover, Salisbury road Winchester have a lot of history from those times.

Searoburh (Salisbury) has Old Sarum where you can see the place they used to live.

Wintancestre (Winchester) has many Wessex king's buried there.

Hamtun became Southampton but not much remains there.

A lot of the New Forest area is still as it was during Wessex times or at least decently preserved heritage on display in nearby towns. (Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Downton, Lymington & Nomansland)

0:48 577AD, the moment the fate of the south-west Britons of Dorset, Devon and Cornwall was sealed. Ceawlin of the West Saxons becomes 'bretwalda' after slaying three British kings Conmail, Condidan and Farinmail at the battle of Deorham and captures the Romano-British towns of Glevum (Gloucester), Corinium Dobunnorum (Cirencester) and Aquae Sulis (Bath). As a result, the Britons in the south-west were now divided from their fellow Britons in Wales.

You can imagine how much of a devastating defeat this was for the Britons while the Saxons managed to fully-establish their foothold in his region. You can also imagine the reaction of Ceawlin and his kinsmen as they entered the decayed Roman city of Bath and came across marvellous works such as the old Roman baths.

Because Melvyn Bragg was talking with experts about Offa on R4, loving geography I immediately wondered about the geographic limits of Wessex. Because your map at 0:33 shows the kingdom basically beginning at my local coastlines of Christchurch Bay and the Solent, would this mean they first arrived at what is now Lymington, Christchurch, Taddiford Gap, Beaulieu River, Keyhaven or Ashlett Creek at Fawley ? There’s nothing around here to signify such a historical moment which seems odd in a country so preoccupied by its past. Is there further information re their first recorded landing available ? 🐢

Crazy how seemingly Wessex Began in Dorset and Hampshire, I had no idea. My family have been from Dorset for as far as my tree goes, perhaps there is ancestry to those who helped build this country.

You can see the West Saxons overcoming Wansdyke and pushing south in 653 AD, pretty cool to see my local history in action on a map.
