Having played with Adobe Podcast AI's speech enhancer I'm expecting mediocre performance but hoping for the best when it comes to their Mic Check tool. In this video I run it through it's paces.

It takes a rare amount of intellectual honesty, humility, and generosity to share this. I would have just re-filmed it. Thank you for giving us all the opportunity to see something on social media that isn't one of someone's carefully-curated "best moments." I believe that kind of culture contributes to depression and anxiety.

Why am I reading Turn down gain? Am I missing something ? 😕
Is it April 1st already? lol

Thanks for this. Not the Adobe mic test as such, but a survey of your surroundings. I'm amazed that you can make your post results sound so clean.

It says turn down gain from your first check - it's too loud apparently

Great stuff. I played with the mic check too a few weeks back. I didn't find it intuitive either. Did something very similar to you.

I feel so vindicated! Right when this tool came out I tested it and it also had me turn my gain down far till it said things were dandy (except no one could hear me haha!). Looks exactly the same as many months ago when I used it, wonder if they're actively still working on it or if it's destined to die? I did also think the enhancer was not too shabby. Funny episode!

Does "acceptable" mean usable by Adobe Audio Enhancement AI? Might account for the low bar.

13:13 tell me you're making an ASMR video without telling me you're making an ASMR

Maybe it means the gain is too high???

Interesting. I played with it a little bit today too after I saw your video. I think it has trouble figuring out what is going on with a dynamic mic. I was using a SM58 with Zoom F3 as USB interface. I wanted to try it because my house is like the polar opposite of your recording space - at least when the kids are awake.

For audience educations sake, it’s important to note that Adobe is probably not smart enough to distinguish Gain from Level. Your ISO may have been clipping (edit:limiting/redlining) but the post fader level was still a brick walled -12, hence why the oopsie-results were not even as extreme as your meters suggested.

Professional audio operator vs AI. Fight! Professional audio operator win. Perfect.

I had to laugh as I was about to rage type that you were misreading the "more gain" chart until about 9 minutes. It's not the best designed display, I'll grant you that. But I was able to interpret that being inside the oval was the "ideal" according to Adobe, and the extreme right was more accurate if written as "High", instead of "More". For a company that caters to designers, they kind of missed the ball here.

LOL, I guess, Adobe needs to work on their user interface. I thought the interface was confusing as well.

9:02 🤣 oh Allen. I know the feeling though.

You should have stuck the mic right into the computer case. I bet that would result in the crispest and clearest readings of them all.
And yes, this was actually a fun adventure to witness after a rather exhausting day. Perfect for a bit sleepy brain.

I wonder if Adobe is looking for the phrase it wrote, but it is likely not

LOL! That was total garbage like you said. You would think a 274 billion dollar company could do better. I was thinking this would be a great tool to recommend to fellow online teachers but this would only make them pull their hair out. The User Interface was total garbage and the acceptable parameters were garbage. The idea is awesome, execution . . . as you said . . . garbage. 🤣
