I never knew this. I assumed the "emo" in emoji had something to do with the word "emotion" in English 😭

It’s crazy how “emoji” is overlooked to be a Japanese word!

Edit: How did this generic comment of mines surmount over 1k likes LOL hey y’all have a wonderful week

I knew "emoji" was japanese, but I figured that it was shortened from the English word "emotion" or something and written like エモジ

I always assumed "emoji" was something to do with a variation or progression from the word "emoticon" as they were full on illustrations "🙂" instead of just the typed characters " :) " of the past.

I love this. I wanted to learn Japanese forever. But the written stuff gives me the chills. And i kinda like the light hearted format which allows me to at least comprehend some words and the associated sounds.

Arrigato :)

Emoji was created firstly by a Japanese who did work at Ntt Docomo in 90'. It's mentioned in a book I study in college. But I forgot his name, need to check it out 😅

Japan also pioneered the use of pictograms. IIRC, it was first used in the Olympics and now you can see it on common stuffs like toilet symbols.

I actually did know emoji is a Japanese word, since I learned a little bit of Japanese before and encountered that word. Didn’t know about all individual origins of the characters though
