Paris surburbs, late 90s, middle school; a new classmate arrives from the US. He asks "you know Rancid?".. I didn't know. What a discovery.

Heard this song on the radio again today. I had forgotten both the band and the songname but automatically started singing along.

Rancid is one of those rare bands that just own everything they do. Every song on this album is amazing. We were so much more open in the 90s to everything and balanced. Maybe we will find our way back.

I remember when this song came out, it was a ska scene that is not really as prevalent today we had pogs, slammers, skate boards, comic books, stussy, quicksilver, all the stuff to keep you going when your in your teens. Yes there were beepers back then (i know right?) 311 was just coming out with the "down" song and Empire Records and Scream movies were coming out with movie theaters that were safe. The Prodigy had "Fat of the Land" coming back and we danced to a dj playing "firestarter" at our school prom who would have thought the world would change so much. There was still shadows of Notorious B.I.G and Tupac. Bullies getting over on kids in schools now we've grown up and raise our own kids and they don't want to be picked on just like we didn't day in and day out. Hopefully we do a history reminder in our minds before taking action to move toward a better and brighter future. I will also say at this point in time chat rooms had no rules and not much has changed since then, it really hasn't but i guess you had to be there :)

this song has been my favorite punk song from the moment I first heard it to this day many years later.

If you wanna make the move
Then you better come in
It's just the ability to reason
That wears so thin
Living and dying and the stories that are true
Secrets to a good life is knowing when you're through

[Chorus]
Black coat, white shoes, black hat, Cadillac
Yeah, the boy's a time bomb
[x2]

Well, he's back in the hole where they got him living
Like a rat but he's smarter than that nine lives
Like a cat 15 years old take him to the youth authority home
First thing you learn is that you got to make it
In this world alone

[Chorus]

Now he's gotten out he's gotten free he's gotta go gotta car
21 years old he's runnin' numbers from the bar
His pager's beepin' he's got in deep in
Whatever he can move on in you know that kid's a creepin'

[Chorus]
The boy’s a time bomb

Tears come from the razor that's been tattooed below
His eye his mother cries she knows that he is strong enough
To die he's rollin' in the Cadillac it's midnight sunroof is down
Three shots rung out, the hero's dead, the new king is crowned.

[Chorus x2]
Ohh, time bomb

I’m not sure why, but I feel as if this song has “Mr. Blue Sky” levels of ability to be played in any situation whatsoever
