What you are is the truth. That truth is denied when you follow somebody, follow a priest, a guru, i.e any spiritual authority. Authority destroys not only truth, but your understanding of truth. So dont follow anybody with regard to understanding what the truth is. o observe yourself, to understand yourself, what you are. That is the whole problem of Existence. To understand our relationship with each other, however intimate, however distant. To be understood and to go beyond. And in the understanding of that relationdhip, comes the reality of ones own existence.
