Fennario (Folk Song Cover)_Nina Ricci

Показать описание
"Fennario" is a version of “The “Bonnie Lass o’ Fyvie” which originated in Scotland but has since made it’s way to America and been covered and adapted by many musicians such as Simon and Garfunkel, the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, and the list goes on.
The song’s story continues to envelop today’s listeners in the mysterious love story of Pretty Peggy-O and Sweet William. The version I fell for is from a live recording sung by Joan Baez called Joan Baez in Concert, Part 2.
Recounting the story according to the version I sing, soldiers were marching down to “Fennario.” Standing by watching the soldiers pass is Pretty Peggy-O and perhaps her mother. A relationship takes shape after Peggy-O’s mother measures Captain Sweet William by the gold standard and he measures up. She’ll have a carriage and true love, how could there be a happier match? There is an announcement of the death of Sweet William and the ominous narrator warns that if ever he returns to the... more
lyrics
As we marched down to Fennario,
As we marched down to Fennario,
Our captain fell in love with a lady like a dove
They call her by name pretty Peggy-o.
What will your mother think pretty Peggy-o?
What will your mother think pretty Peggy-o?
What will your mother think when she hears the guineas clink,
The soldiers all marchin' before you-o?
In a carriage you will ride, pretty Peggy-o.
In a carriage you will ride, pretty Peggy-o.
In a carriage you will ride with your true love by your side,
As fair as any maiden in the are-o.
Come runnin' down your stairs, pretty Peggy-o.
Come runnin' down your stairs, pretty Peggy-o.
Come runnin' down your stairs combin' back your yellow hair,
And bid farewell to sweet William-o.
Sweet William is dead, pretty Peggy-o.
Sweet William is dead, pretty Peggy-o.
Sweet William is dead, and he died for a maid,
The fairest maid in the are-o.
If ever I return, pretty Peggy-o.
If ever I return, pretty Peggy-o.
If ever I return all your cities I will burn,
Destroying all the ladies in the are-o.
Destroying all the ladies in the are-o.
