'Europe could die': Macron urges stronger defences, economic reforms • FRANCE 24 English

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday for stronger, more integrated European defences as he outlined his vision for a more assertive European Union on the global stage. In a speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris, he also said the continent must not become a vassal of the United States. "There is a risk our Europe could die. We are not equipped to face the risks," Macron said. FRANCE 24's European Editor Armen Georgian tells us more.

Main battle tanks have dropped from 18, 941 to 4, 362, fighters from 3, 660 to 1, 586, large surface ships from 180 to 109, and submarines from 107 to 57.
If Europe's defense inventory is to be replenished, this is a huge business.
The defense industry is highly capital-intensive and technology-intensive, and can create huge economic benefits.
The French defense industry is completely different from the American system. If Europe's defense inventory is replenished and European products are chosen, France will gain huge economic benefits.
Macron's speech focused on this. Europe should not rely on the United States, and defense products should choose European ones.

Macron is visionary leader for sure when most leaders focus on tomorrow, Macron thinks about decades ahead. Europe needs to get migration crisis right. That was the cause of Brexit. That is also the cause of rise of populists in Europe. This also symbolizes the mindset of majority of Europeans. Unfortunately some leaders in EU are out of touch with general people.
