The bloke who figured out the rubber cone brings to mind a good friend who died this week, Lyle. While he was working in drafting at an aerospace company, he was brought in to sketch out the design that the engineers were spitballing. The brains were still arguing about their design. On his break, he went and grabbed a surplus office cart,
some sheet stock and borrowed a drill. He cobbled together his idea and presented it to the engineers. They saw it did what they needed while being basically free and immediately available. To top it off, the cart was mobile since it had casters. RIP Lyle 1935-2024.

Guy is amazing. He is such a likeable character. He reminds me very much of Fred Dibnah rip. Never happier than when in overalls, hands dripping in oil, tinkering with parts in a shed.

Just a rubber tit on the end of the cone to stop ice build up at 35.000ft at -40. A simple idea to a big problem for Rolls Royce, thanks to Frank in the factory. He probably came up with that idea after racking his brain dunking a biscuit in a cup of tea. It’s great to see british owned manufacturers alive and well and up in the north where Britains industrial heartland was the epicentre of GT. Britains manufacturing base. The U.K. leads the world in innovation but the powers that be have done a lot of damage destroying British owned manufacturing, outsourcing everything and importing everything. Yet, the R&D and innovation still comes from the U.K..
