I todays video we take a first look back at an old classic by SSI, Panzer General. The grandfather of the Panzer Corps, Strategic Mind, and a half dozen other games, Panzer General is an all time classic wargame that created a sub genre of wargames that have survived for 30 years.

Panzer General was a classic for me on PlayStation 1, so in todays video I take a look at the PS1 version of the game in what may become a weekly series looking at classic retro wargame titles.

I played the Hell out of this game. One of the true greats that connected me with my father outside of the board game world. Video wargaming was usually a solitary affair, so this was a natural extension of our past hobby. ❤

Also the game of my childhood... This and PG2... Darn, how I loved just putting on Red Hot Chili Peppers, and playing just one more turn.

My dad and I loved this game. I was in my early 20's when I bought it and I remember being with my friends at an amusement park and while they'r ehaving a good time going on rides, I'm trying to figure out how to take Moscow.

The reason to buy halftracks instead of trucks is that they move at full speed off-road, whereas trucks move at half speed off-road. Also, of course, much better defense.

A buddy and I played this on a 3DO...taking notes on what unit we had, level, and if they were mechanized. Needless to say there was a lot of erasing when we marched into Russia...great time and thank you for the memories

In Panzer General the hard difficulty setting is actually easier because more enemies means you earn more prestige. More prestige means you fill your roster and overstack your units to their max and it just snowballs.

A few years into a campaign and you can have all your infantry upgraded to bridge engineers at 14 or 15 strength. They tear through entrenched units and you always have a bridging unit near a river you want to cross.

In Warsaw, my strategy is to flank both the northern and the eastern cities by river crossings. while that is going on, the main group goes after warsaw directly. You take out the artillery for the northern city and then hug next to it to stop new units spawning up there. The same thing happens with the city in the east. Get the airfield and get next to the city to stop the game spawning there.
I also purchase as many fighters and dive bombers as possible. Warsaw is excellent for leveling them up because there is no air defense and they can do ground attacks on every turn.

Norway is the most difficult scenario in the game in my opinion. You have tanks land at the middle area of the map. Because the opposing navy will take out anything else. You use infantry and artillery at the bottom of the map to get the cities. The two big ships at the bottom of the map knock out the air defense and the artillery in that area. Dive bomb the cities in the middle of the map and dive bomb the anti-submarine ships until they are gone. If you can take out the anti-submarine ships, the submarines, dive bombers and your navy can take out the enemy ships.

The hardest part of Norway is the final part. You have to take out the air defense at the final city either by sacrificing dive bomber strength or getting your navy there. Then you have to take out their artillery and then you can take the final city.

The key to most things in the game as a whole is to develop air superiority with fighters and then beat up the other side with the dive bombers.

SSI, I did historical research and playtesting for them back in the 90's. Mostly for designers like Gary Grigsby, Chuck Kroegel and David Landry. I loved Panzer General too.

I love that game. Even found the book on German equipment. That helped me decide how, when, or if to upgrade. The book also showed the options for winning early or barely winning. Invading America was the best. And yes, after some memorization, hard level success was possible.

One of my best early PC games. Clash of Steel and this were my favourite war games.
