Israeli PM Netanyahu Visits Captured Territory in Syria, Says Troops Will Stay | Firstpost America
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Syrian side of the buffer zone in Golan Heights. He met with Israeli soldiers who took control of the Syrian territory after the dramatic ouster of dictator Bashar al-Assad earlier this month. Standing atop Mount Hermon, Netanyahu vowed Israeli troops would remain stationed in Syria for the foreseeable future. With his latest visit, Netanyahu became the first sitting Israeli leader to set foot this far inside Syria. Netanyahu says the seizure of the buffer zone is a temporary defensive move to ensure Israel's safety amid political instability in Syria. However, Syria's new rebel leadership will likely view his visit to the Golan Heights as provocative.
