Do Reflection Filters (a.k.a Portable Vocal Booths) actually work?

Do reflection filters actually work? I think they do - but to a certain degree.

In my video test, I could barely hear the difference. (The recording with the reflection filter sounds slightly cleaner and less bright to me.)

Sure, having the reflection filter helps prevent unwanted sounds to be picked up by the microphone. However, they don't replace properly treated rooms and acoustics.

Still - it's handy to have one around, whenever you just want a cleaner sounding recording. (And to help your vocalist get serious, too - psychologically.)

I think a larger difference may have been heard if you were singing, or talking at a level that you could hear the reflections in the room

Listening you talking was enough to understand it doesn't work, the reverb of the room doesn't change

the difference is very slight and id suggest having one if you have fans in your room it can help eliminate some background noise but ofcourse you can pick up a $20 one for this

It reduces the reverberation a bit, but it adds comb filtering which is far worse and always audible.

it is better to save and do an acoustic treatment to the room

To me without iso shield, it's clearer. I think the problem with this is that it absorbs higher frequencies but not the lower ones and as a result, recording becomes little muffled. For vocal recordings it's not actually good. I think it is better to record with room and than use some AI tool to remove them. But bet approach is proper room treatment if you want to studio like recordings.

I saw Drake’s large home recording space and he used one. Granted you can see he had some acoustic treatment on the walls but they were far away. That tells me they’re worth a shot

without the filter yo got free natural reverb on that wav file

this might work for omi or figue 8 patterns but for cardiod the curtain and your body did 90% of the work. Very subtle difference.

I didn’t hear a huge difference, but I think that’s because part of reflection filter was too low in relationship to your mouth. Sound waves to spilling over the top. Also if you got a little closer and reduced the gain on the mic less reverbs would be picked up or at least less would be amplified. Just my assumption.

Great Video.. Is that microphone the AT-2020

Lol, there is a very little difference between both the instances and I think any De-verb tool, such as the one that comes along with the izotope RX bundle, can prove to be much more beneficial then spending 100 or 200$ on such a useless reflection filter.

Might need the booth a bit higher and speak a little closer

I could hear a difference in EQ... reverberations make your voice more muddy and bassy, not good.

These devices are the audio/recording equivalents of homeopathy.

Not enough help to justify the cost. Good Narration and demonstration. Good English language skills. Nice job. I am convinced not to buy one. Helpful video. Thank you. TTJ

less than 5% difference. I have to think that the rejection properties of the mic and the curtains do most of the heavy lifting. Would be more interesting if you removed those from the equation.

You have to shout to notice difference

Almost no difference in this one. I'd like this to be tested from farther away from microp[hone though
