My grandmother took me into the woods when I was around 4, she showed me a plant, and told me to remember it well.. she said if you're ever married and he is hurting you, you give him a nice tea from the leaves and as long as you do he will stay on the couch and be very sick, and will stay sick until you quit giving it to him... but if he doesn't stop hurting you, then you make a nice stew, cutting up the root and put a generous amount in the pot, he will never bother you again.

I grew up with the most loving grandmother anybody could imagine. She was a white lady who lived out in what we called the prairie. She was a healer & would treat anybody no matter their colour & 99% of the time she could pull somebody through their sickness. I recall one day when a black lady who lived out in the prairie came into town to see my grandmother. She looked awful. Even as a little kid I understood a man had really hurt her. I didn't even comprehend that a husband would hurt his wife like that. My grandmother had a cabinet in the kitchen we kids couldn't go near. Inside that cabinet she had Mason jars with all sort of plants & roots & the like in them. Got a tooth ache? Willow bark poultice on that jaw. Constipation? Dandy lion flower mixed with violet leaves like a salad. I later learned that the Mason jars with the number 13 on them would kill you. Jimson weed. She kept jimson weed in one of them & that's what she gave her. My grandfather was heading to the prairie in less that 48 hours to go lay out that woman's husband for his funeral. I can tell by what I've read here my grandmother wasn't the only little old lady helping out women in a really bad spot

I've mentioned this before. I used to deliver medicine to nursing homes. Do you have any idea how many old women told me about the "accidents" their abusive husbands had that ended in them being widows back when they didn't allow no fault divorce? Falling off ladders, falling in the lake drunk while fishing and drowning, accidentally eating peanuts, shooting themselves while cleaning their gun was one i heard several times...

That slight tremor in her voice when she delivers that “Sometimes being a bitch…” line always tears at my heart.
It’s almost as if she mourns because she has chosen survival. Very powerful.

Nobody but Judy Parfitt could have played Vera Donovan. She was sheer perfection. Loathsome and pitiless one moment, compassionate and understanding the next. The switch was so subtle, you don't even realize it's the same character. I love this film and Kathy Bates, that goes without saying.

Back in the so called “good old days” that people are now on about there were so many widows who made it that way and none was the wiser. what’s that saying “ when you back an animal into a corner, that’s when its the most dangerous.”

This is one of King's best works and I think Bates shined more in this one than Misery. It is such a soul crushing story about the hardships of life & the lengths some find themselves going to be free.

There's a reason that one Song of the Dixie Chicks "Goodbye Earl" was so popular. 😂

I remember my grandma telling me a story of what my cousins were going to do with their abusive drunkin father. He use beat them so bad he was so mean. They wanted to use rat poison in the alcohol he drank. He use to take a shot gun fire it in the air scaring them. Never Judge a person you never know what they went through.

Journey.
