For those who don’t understand the giger counter reference or haven’t watched NKRFZ reaction to it (he lived there btw) the city they are in is Chelyabinsk, a secret city to house workers for the mayak nuclear facility, this was the birthplace of the plutonium core used in the soviet atomic bomb program, however mayak didn’t use proper safety precautions for handling nuclear material. It also doesn’t help that during the beginning mayak dumped nuclear waste into the nearby techa river, many villages relied on that river for water. However it was then decided that the waste should be dumped into lake Karachay, now dried up spewing radioactive dust, an hour standing next to the lake will kill you. But aside from that it’s ranked as 3rd on the nuclear disaster scale and was kept secret until the fall of the Soviet Union. Also an underground plutonium waste tank exploded spreading radioactive fallout throughout the surrounding area, this was known as the kyshtym disaster. The plant is still in operation today and the surrounding areas are highly contaminated, as well as a surge in cancer or radiation linked illnesses.
