How do you do passive abilities in your D&D game?

I've totally used passive stealth before. The player did not say he was sneaking, was wearing CHAIN MAIL, and didn't have a good Dex. I used his passive stealth for an opposed roll and the sleeping ogre runt STILL didn't beat it so the player was successful.

My passive stealth would be impressive with the amount of times I've snuck up on people, passed by them without their notice and been forgotten after a conversation was held. I even have to actively make my steps make sound so I spook people less often.

Passive skills, in theory, are used at almost all times within the game.
It's just that, in general, if a character is made to do something it's more fun to have them roll to accomplish that task. So, regardless of whether or not they're likely to actually fail, it's still fun for most people to let them roll to see how big a number they can get.
About the only time passive skills would be called into question is when the character is doing something of menial importance, anyway; Not spooking a horse while feeding it would likely be a DC 5 if it's a trained horse, so unless there's some issue with the horse there's never any reason to roll.

Since the game system itself describes mundane activities as having a DC between 5 and 10, a passive roll is generally enough to accomplish basically any task. The entire point of rolling thus becomes bringing attention to the point when a passive roll wouldn't resolve the issue, otherwise the DM would just constantly look at players and go 'your passive skill makes you fail this check without rolling.'

Passive perception is 10 plus the skill modifier I'd imagine it would be the same for all the other skills as well

The observant feat gives +5 to passive investigation. However, roll 20 didn’t have a spot for passive investigation, so my dm said that my artificer could gain expertise in it instead. Very fun.

Passive strength could give you advantage or disadvantage on certian checks.

Youd get better intimidation and hand to hand but struggle more with pickpocketing and animal heandleing.

You could have bodth effects increased/decreased equally further the higher your strength.

Thus if you have low strength youd have high pickpocket but your punches are weaker even with good hand to hand.

Kinda reminds me of bittercup from elder scrolls.

Some times you do just meet a guy that you look at and go "this is the coolest motherfucker to ever exist. I am to be the knight to his lordship and serve whatever cause he deems worthy. If I am to die on this path it will have been a life well lived"

I use passive scores a Lot, as a dm it save you SO much thoughtwork, bookkeeping, and avoids meta game chances. As players it not only helps the immersion feel better, but additionally makes it so that people who are trained in a skill actually manage to to not fail on general work, instead only needing to push when trying for things that challenge their skill.

This is also a good option for if you are running spell rolls instead of spell slots, letting the casters be reliable for a given level of spell if they put in the work

I use passive abilities all the time. Stealth survival (for traveling) nature (lore about flairs fauna in area) animal handling slight of hand (avg ability to tie knots) athletics/acrobatics (when the group tries to be goofy) and intimidation (I call it a room presence so how character’s generally view the characters)

The free rules set for DND 5e 2014 actually has a part called Passive Checks about this that details how to calculate for any skill. It is under the Ability Checks section of Chapter 7: Using Ability Scores

I use them as general guidelines of how good the character would naturally be at that before requiring a check

Best feeling ever is when you walk into class normally and even the teacher doesn’t notice you until you speak. I must have a passive stealth of like 17 for how often stuff like that happens

Passive Stealth and Passive Strength are simply the DM going, "Ye sure, sounds like something they could do"

Ah, yes. This channel's

"Cute, teeny tiny little babies you would overthrow a small to medium sized nation for."

my favorite character i ever played was in a very different system, she was a psychic minmaxed to do therapy with a side of extremely strong psychic healing, but one of my favorite bits from her sheet was a “feat” called striking looks, that allowed you to name a trait and add it to social rolls it would apply to, hers was harmless and it saved her life repeatedly via passive effects like this lol

I've seen passive Stealth and passive Investigation both used numerous times

The husband is always amused at how high my passive Intimidation is. Most people find me spooky and unapproachable. Husband knows my "grumpy face" is just me thinking real hard about dumb things like how centaur organs work. They have two rib-cages. Does everything ELSE double?

He knows this because I text him dumb stuff like this as our primary form of communication (being mute) all the time.

Pathfinder 2e has a thing for this. A feat called "Assurance, " you can take it multiple times, and it makes it so that instead of rolling, skill checks of a certain type are always 10+your modifier.
