Introduction to GIS - Lab 6 – GPS Data Collection in the Field: Mapping Campus Trees

This week, we will use Garmin GPS units to navigate to four trees from the UM Arboretum Layer. You may notice that you never quite reach the tree you are heading for. This due to all the GPS errors we discussed in Lecture. Once close, stop navigating, go up to the tree, and take a new GPS point. Guess at the tree species and write it down. Once you take all four points, you will need to transpose the easting and northing of the coordinates for each tree into an Excel file. If you are not in Missoula, or don’t want to come to campus, you can use the Excel file provided. Then use the Add XY Data tool to create layer of you GPS trees and map them compared to the arboretum layer. If you find this video helpful, please like it and subscribe. Thanks!
