Theory: the Lord Commander found out about Avocato's betrayal in this moment, which is why the Lord Commander set him up to kill his son in the first place. So eventually Gary and his friend's timetraveling created their own timeline, and little Cato speaking to past Avocato is the whole reason he and Gary met.
