James McMurtry – 'Saint Mary of the Woods'

On his recent tour, acclaimed singer-songwriter James McMurtry stopped by the Fretboard Journal offices to play his tune "Saint Mary of the Woods." McMurtry brought his Guild GF-30 guitar with him, one of a few that he has.

"I've always liked [Guilds]. I like these GF-30s for stage performance," he said. "They work well with the Sunrise [pickup]. Laminated neck ... they don’t move around when you tune them, you can put any kind of whack tuning you want on them."

And he tunes it CGDGBD with capo on V except for the lowest string, so it rings a big open C chord. With his wicked flat-picking, he can fly all over the fretboard...
