Spinnerbait/Chatterbait Setup (Rod/Reel/Line) - Patrick Walters

When it comes to spinnerbait and chatterbait fishing, Bassmaster Elite Series angler, Patrick Walters, likes to keep things simple and consistent. For each technique, Patrick likes to use the same rod: a Daiwa Tatula 7'4" Heavy Power, Moderate-Fast Action rod that was designed by Daiwa specifically for bladed jig and spinnerbait fishing. This rod is a glass composite rod, making it ideal for single-hooked moving baits with its parabolic bend, allowing the fish to really "get" the bait and stay hooked when fighting back to the boat. The length of the 7'4" makes it great for achieving long casts, but is also versatile enough to be an effective rod for target casting around shallow cover. For both the spinnerbait and chatterbait, Patrick prefers using 17 or 20lb fluorocarbon line, but prefers to stick with 20lb when the conditions allow. A Tatula Elite 7.1:1 gear ratio is Patrick's reel of choice for the spinnerbait, while an 8.1:1 gear ratio gets the nod when slinging the chatterbait.

I know this is a common theme nowadays, I've tried for about two years now and I've personally lost way more fish with a set up like that than I ever have on what I call my spinnerbait/chatterbait combos which consists of a 6.10 MH and 7.3 MH fast actions, but the trick...I throw em on 15 lbs izorline xxx copolymer. Everyone is different though and gotta use what works.

To each his own. I don't lose fish on a Spinnerbait on a graphite rod. Rarely lose them on a bladed jig either.

Don’t really see why a person would use a different rod for one than the other unless your using different sized lures or your just wanting a different length to cast more accurately vs further.

Similar hook size, similar weight, and overall a similar retrieve.
