Are Your EQ Filters Hurting Your Mix?

With graphic EQ’s it’s probably a good note that we often all make sharper cuts than we need to given the visuals, but they’re all different tools and sometimes you need surgical sharp narrow cuts, follow your ears above all, almost all EQ results in some sort of phase shift yet you won’t find a record without it. Multiband compressors are probably far more worrisome as far as phase shifts are concerned in my experience.

If you switch ProQ to “natural phase, ” doesn’t it mitigate this problem?

“Change it to natural/linear phase” it will eventually lead to pre ringing problems and you don’t have the cpu to handle several instances of linear phase eqs plus it creates a noticeable latency

This is why it’s so so so so sold is important to get good recordings and have good production before the final mix down and master. Every single little thing you do affects the waves.

Sharpness on soothe controls how narrow and deep the cuts are on the plugin so basically u could sweep to find the harsh frequencies and then when u do make a broader cut as opposed to a narrow one to make it feel more natural

Mostly, it doesn’t matter. Where it would matter, is if you, as an example, have 2 drum OH, that captures a lot of the same sound, then altering the phase on one drasticly, could have an impact, but not necessarily in a bad way.
If your whole drum part is sampled drums, it would not make any difference if the phase is altered drasticly.
These guys are always talking a big game, being very confident, but they get a lot of stuff wrong. A lot.
