LOST
Lost, I feel lost
in a galaxy of thoughts
Hurt me
I always do
Hurt me
like you do
Illusion, life is an illusion
Illusion, ‘till it comes to a conclusion
Hurt me
I always do
Hurt me
like you do
———
Following their Healing Dreams demo in 2018, the band have achieved a refined and focussed record that stands tall among its peers, lacing together the thick distortion-laden staples of the genre with a punch that can only be held up to hardcore, all revolving around a through line of fervor courtesy of...melancholic vocals. From the clutch of opener ‘Concrete’ to the revamped demo track ‘Endless’, there’s an unmistakable thrum of desperation to the mid-paced wall of drums and guitar, overwhelming and profound akin to contemporaries like Nothing and Hum. Despite the downtempo macerate of ‘Words Undone’, it feels nothing short of triumphant as the first single from the album, with an arresting guitar lead climaxing at the track’s close. ‘How Soon Is Soon?’ and ‘Honest Feelings’ continue to capture the facets of the band’s proficiency, holding their punk and hardcore influences up whilst...guitar leads elevate the tracks into a dense, lofty miasma...lyrics harness a dissociation with oneself, the complete inability to focus on tangible experience; “life is an illusion / ‘till it comes to a conclusion” has never resonated more.
Late Bloom is a beautiful excursion in modern heavy guitar music, one that sits firmly between viscera and undeniably sweet auburn melancholy.
