The problem I have with powerful laptops used closed (plugged in an external monitor) is heat. If they work hard, they get hot, if they get hot and are closed they risk damaging not just the insides due to poor ventilation, but more likely damaging the screen. I have seen damaged laptops in the past, damaged from exactly that. Anyway, to each their own.
Regarding the overall setups shown, obviously good job.
