Imaging having a bad driver and you bump into a tree or something and your squad blows up

Imagine you accidentally lose a mine rack behind you and the group of people in the other truck are like: oh sh*t

To everyone worried about having explosives sitting on the side of the halftrack:

When the mines aren't about to be laid, the detonator/fuse for the mine would be removed, rendering it pretty safe to handle. Any external explosion that could possibly denotate the mines while they were sitting in those racks would already destroy the entire halftrack, so its not really a big deal.

My great grandpa served on a half track in WWII, He was with the 811th tank destroyers and he was wounded in Belgium in the battle of the bulge.

Explosive reactive Armor was invented in 1970

*ERA before 1970:*

There is no detonators in those mines.. And cause the explosive is inside metal, I really takes a lot to set one of, and there is only a small chance that it sets one besides it of.

All it takes is one near miss from a shell and the whole thing goes up

My father commanded a half track during WWII. I believe it had a long barrel 30mm anti-aircraft cannon. I still have the operators manual, a demilled cannon shell, and the wool blanket that he sat on. . He earned 2 bronze stars.

The detonators aren't installed / armed until after the mine is emplaced. Prior to that, they are stored under the VC's seat in trays with velvet-lined pockets.

Fun Fact: A large egg fits into the pocket, and chickens don't stop laying eggs for a war. My father was rather proud that from June to December '44 they never broke an egg.

The detonators got tossed in the rear stowage bins with the extra ammo, flares, and Thermite grenades to make room.

As a former truck driver in the military, I can confirm riding around with a bunch of explosives in the combat zone fkn sucks.

Imagine someone hitting the mine and how would you quickly lie them

I have legitimately drove an armored M3A2 I believe. Was missing the rear piece of armor. But I basically got the large White i6 to run long enough to get it up my friend’s driveway. Loved it.

It likely wasn't because of the opinion of the crews, but just the mission.

You're not going to be carrying mines if you aren't specifically sent to go lay mines, and half-tracks are general utility vehicles.

The mines don't have fuses in them until they are laid, so they are inert. An infantry squad would use the mines, in conjunction, with many other squads, to help create a barrier or to channel the advancing enemy when the squad is in a defensive position. Finally, soldiers don't get to pick and choose what they carry on and in their vehicles... they are given a loading list and diagram.

The crews wouldn't have a choice as carrying mines would be mission dependent. Similar to food, fuel, ammunition. Or tools for regular maintenance.
