As a young man in vocational agriculture, we would learn multiple things during our studies of forest management. This was one of the exercises we practiced before going to the area to be cleared. Thanks Mr. Phipps for being able to identify the correct equipment.
R.I.P. Bob Phipps, your instructions have lasted a lifetime!

Scouting (in NL, approx 1990) recommends that you should be able to hold the axe for 10 seconds with a straight arm. Blade side facing up as you don’t want to accidentally hit your leg if you fail.
Transport of an axe: Hold the axe head in your palm between thumb and the rest of the fingers. blade side to the front. Axe handle/knob against the front of your shoulder.
We even have a procedure to hand over an axe to someone else.

Grab it by the Knob.

Thank you ma'am, your fan base is both diverse and appreciative...

I, too, am easily controlled by people who grab me by the knob and lift me off the ground.

I was gunna make a comment about the knob but thats low hanging fruit 😂. However the demonstration of how control or lack there of by the camera toppled over was top tier.

I remembered an episode from the anime "Berserk", in which Gatz trains with a big sword, in the center of mass of which he made a weight for greater efficiency of training...
Thank you, an interesting way to test the convenience of an axe - I will find it useful. ;) ;)

That second one you had, I knew a fellow who could grab it by the end, extend it all the way out, then just using his wrist could lower it so it just barely touch his nose! This I’m serious about, not playing at all.
Same with a 72 # heavy bag, I knew another fellow who could hit it hard with one swing it went parallel just shy of the rafters. Same fellow around 40 years old and after a fifth of liquor grabbed my weight set with 110#’s, bent over, grabbed the bar, stood up, curled it it one hand, balancing a 5’ bar with his wrist and pressed it above his head! That’s powerful. I haven’t met anyone else that powerful, where he was also fast! Then he mentioned his dad who could grab a keg of nails and hold it out straight. I don’t know what a keg of nails weighed, but I know what he could do, where a keg of nails must have been a feat itself!
It’s interesting what someone can do!
As I knew another fellow who worked logging, he was in his 70’s, grey headed about 6’3”, real nice fellow, good natured with a sense of humor, he was nothing but muscle, his belly protruded a little, but all muscle. Where in his time loading trucks was done by hand!
I could add more say about the quality of homes built in the 1950’s I think, where the quality of lumber was better as well. The fellow who pressed a 110# barbell over his head, after pressing it, he did drop it, which he was 6’2-3”, then his arm over his head probably easy 7’, where from that height it dropped hitting hardwood floors with 2x12 floor joists, it didn’t do any damage!

Tried this with a fireman's axe, almost lost my toe. New workout/lifting goal unlocked.

Love that you're pivoting to actual teaching. Not that the cool splitting, swords, and "Okie Dokie" weren't already amazing, but now I can learn something useful.

Hahahaha I weigh 112 lbs and I swing an 8 lbs maul . . There ain't no way on God's green earth I could ever lift it one handed like that😂

While I think you really know your stuff and are super good at explaining things, I am not sure this is all that goes into it. I split about 10 cord a year by hand and use an x27 Fiskars primarily which is only about 4.5 pounds at the head. I bet I could split a human hair lengthwise at this point from a control standpoint. But I just tried it and cannot raise the x27 from the end like you showed.

Either way, thanks for the great content as always.

I can't, don't own a axe. All the way from sweden, altough, love your happiness.

Test works with a door too. If you can't lift it by the knob then it's going to feel off trying to wield it
