It is not a war song. It is a song of riches, wealth, success and how how you should not become arrogant because the snake of arrogance waits for the perfect moment to strike.

The viking age always interested me, being Icelandic and all, and then they make this amazing series with shield maidens and everything. Love it! And the music is just ear candy. I can even understand parts of the lyrics which just feels amazing!

Lots of people seem to be arguing about whether they have Norse blood or not. Let's try and set some things straight, shall we? First off, I'm no professional expert on genetics, ethnicity or historical migration, but I know enough I think to put some basics on the table.

So. Who can be considered descendants of the Norse and possibly the Vikings? Well, the first are the people who are from Scandinavia and whose families are from Scandinavia all the back in those times, for obvious reasons.

The second are people from Scotland, small parts of Ireland and roughly half of England (we're looking at pretty much any part of England north of historical Wessex and East of the western parts of historical Mercia). Why these people? These people aren't Norse, you surely say. Well, that's a little true, but not completely. The fact remains that after the Romans were done in Britain, the Anglo-Saxons took over England and settled it. Who are the Anglo-Saxons? Well, they were from North Germany and still had the same Norse mythology and an extremely similar culture (before arriving in England and eventually adopting Christianity), with the third largest tribe not even listed in the "Anglo-Saxon" name, the Jutes, being from Denmark.

The fact also remains that every successful invasion and migration to England after the Anglo-Saxons took over were from Nordic countries and Viking forces. England went through a period known as the Danelaw, in which half of England (see above) were ruled by the historical Viking leaders and their warriors for a good few years. As a result, a lot of people from these areas at the time were basically the children of Nordic settlers. In fact, the Vikings still ruled parts of England right up until the Battle of Stamford Bridge (which took place in North England two weeks before the Battle of Hastings a whole 200+ years after the first Viking invasion ), where they were finally defeated by an Anglo-Saxon King.

But even after that, the Nords still got their own back. How? The Normans invaded England after that, right? The modern English were descended from Normans who were all French and shit? Not entirely true. Normandy was given the Viking King Rolf/Rollo (literally the exact same person as Rollo from the Vikings TV show. In fact, him being given Normandy was the end of the latest season), whose warriors adopted Christianity but remained there for generations. It was Rollo's grandson (or great grandson, can't remember) and the grandchildren of that original army who took over England at the Battle of Hastings.

So in conclusion, yes, if you are English, there's a good chance you are Nordic ethnically. However, there's also a good chance that you are Anglo-Saxon, who are very close to Nordic; Roman (though not likely) or Celtic, who were just as awesome as the Nordic peoples, with their own awesome mythology and warriors and who were historically the native Britons.

Scotland apparently has much greater ties to the Nordic countries, though how and why I'm not sure since I haven't bothered to look at Scottish history.

But in Conclusion, if you are from Scandinavia, then you are almost certainly ethnically Nordic and may well be a Viking descendent. If you are from Scotland or England (excluding Cornwall, which was never taken by the Anglo-Saxons or the Nords) then there's a high chance you are also ethnically Nordic/Anglo-Saxon, although there's also a good chance you are Celtic.

I hope that helps some people out. =)

Everyone here is saying "I have Viking blood". Fine you're probably right. But you do realise that your ancestors probably weren't the Warriors you see in this video? They were probably farmers, traders, potters, fishmongers etc, not professional warriors

Despite I'm mexican, I 've been always fascinated with viking floklore. I've read a lot about Odin, father of the gods and true ruler of the Valhalla in the Asgard, Thor and his hammer Mjjolnir, his brother Loki, the valkyries, Yggdrasil, the tree of life, the Aersi... If I had viking ancestry, I sgould be proud of it.

I am Norwegian and proud of my ancestors :) even though they were brutal and violent they also believed in equality and many rumours about Vikings raping women are untrue, Scandinavians treated women like queens.
