Around December 2016 Vlos started coughing. We were not immediately alarmed, everyone does cough sometimes. But it became worse over the weeks so we called a vet, she did give us some mild medicine, she was also not very stressed about it. The medicine did work for the first few days but when we stopped her cough was immediately back and became worse . We also asked a holistic vet she didn't know what it was eather but gave us some herbes to help vlos. Also the normal vet came again and gave us the same medicine again but everytime we gave it for the prescripted amount of time, the moment we stopped it was back and it slowely became worse and worse. No one told us anything about where the coughing came from, they just gave us stuff to help Vlos for that moment. It became to the stage where she could not even trot anymore because she just couldn't breath.
In june 2017 Vlos and I had planned to go to Jossy Reynvoet to be working student again like the year before. With her cough I knew we couldn't fully work on everything I wanted to work on but I hoped maybe a change of scenery would be good for her health and hopefully we could still learn at least something. Sadly her coughing got not better at Jossy's place. Jossy adviced his own vet to take a look at Vlos so he came and he immediately said the reason of her cough was dust (in the hay, the sand of the paddock, arena, etc.) he gave me the same medicine as the other vets we had for the past 6 months but now also advised me to take all the dust away, so giving her wet hay, not working in the arena if it is dusty, and not having her in a paddock but in the field. After we made these changes and gave the same medicine again, after 6 months of pretty much non stop coughing, after 4 days with the new management het coughing was gone and it didn't come back even after we stopped with the medicine.
After her coughing was officially gone I had still 1,5 week left at jossy's place Jossy helped me and Vlos to get back into work after we couldn't do a lot for a long time. thanks to Jossy and his vet Vlos was finally getting better and we could move foreward again.
Looking back ofcourse it made a lot of sense that the dust was the cause of everything but if not one vet or no one ever tells you... afterall a hard lesson but definitely a real important one.
