CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) says goodbye to Gillespie (Rod Steiger) at the train station.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The winner of the 1967 Oscar for Best Picture (as well as four other Oscars), In the Heat of the Night is set in a small Mississippi town where an unusual murder has been committed. Rod Steiger plays sheriff Bill Gillespie, a good lawman despite his racial prejudices. When Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a well-dressed northern African-American, comes to town, Gillespie instinctively puts him under arrest as a murder suspect. Tibbs reveals himself to be a Philadelphia police detective; after he and Gillespie come to a grudging understanding of one another, Tibbs offers to help in Gillespie's investigation. As the case progresses, both Gillespie and Tibbs betray a tendency to jump to culture-dictated conclusions. Still, the case is solved thanks to the informal teamwork of the two law officers. Based on the novel by John Ball, In the Heat of the Night inspired two sequels, both starring Poiter as Virgil Tibbs. In 1987, a TV series version of In the Heat of the Night appeared, with Carroll O'Connor as Gillespie and Howard Rollins as Tibbs.

Its no exaggeration to say this is one of the greatest films ever made.

The symbolism of this scene was ahead of its times. A white man in a position of authority carrying the luggage of a black man, portrayed the deep respect and admiration that had grown between the men. When Gillespie articulates "Virgil, you take care you hear" and Virgil Tibbs looks back without uttering a word and smiles warmly, relays the deep respect and friendship that has been transformative in both their lives. A moving scene, filled with symbolism.

Of all the great scenes in this film, this one is such a lovely finishing touch. Gillespie lifts out Virgil's case and carries it for him to the train marking the respect that has grown between them. The dialogue is scant, words are not needed, but the final "Virgil, you take care, you hear" from Gillespie demonstrates how they have moved beyond simply having respect for one another to a deeper friendship and understanding. What a signal this was for those troubled times and best of all it still teaches us something today.

When Gillespie says:" Virgil you take care you hear" he reveals that behind the facade of that bitter, bad tempered old man, he actually is a very good hearted, decent human being. Great ending.

Something really comes from the heart in Gillespie's, "You take care now, you hear?" And that smile shows a true friendship was made.

Whenever my late father saw Sidney Poitier in this movie, he would say, "He's wearing a nice suit. I like the way he's dressed." He was very impressed. Both father and son were fans.
Thank you, Mr. Sidney Poitier, for entertaining us with your films for so long. Rest in peace.

I was 7 years old when my grandpa took me and my grandma to see that movie, I remember it like a dream only after I watched it. Many years later, i understood it, and I remember my grandma's tears at the end. we lived in south Texas in a small town, but I used to pay with black white Mexican kids every day, and in school, i used to eat at their homes, and they were at mine, but I remember when we used to go to Houston that was different, I remember never mentioned anyone's race only by name until I went to California then race was every thing

No big special effects or post production tricks, yet more powerful than any movie today.

I saw this picture for the first time yesterday on the BBC & the smile from Rob Stiger was absolutely timeless brilliant. You can see the police were in awe of this man.

The tiny and subtle touch of who carries the suitcase is brilliant.

At the end of the day Virgil Tibbs not only gained his respect but also his friendship. Even sharing a smile during their final departure.

Him carrying his suitcase for him shows how far he changed from when they first met. This was a great movie and will be for all time!
