The ignorant complains about Allah to people. This is the greatest ignorance of Whom you complain about and of Whom you complain to.

If he knew his Lord he would not have complained about Him, and if he knew the people he would not have complained to them.

One of the salaf saw a man who complained to someone about his poverty and plight, so he said: "Oh you, by Allah, you have not added anything except that you complain about Him who has mercy on you."

It was also said that when you complain to the son of Adam, you complain about the Most Merciful (Allah), to the one who has no mercy (son of Adam).

Therefore the man of knowledge only complains to Allah alone. The most knowledgeable is the one whose complaint to Allah is about himself, not about the people, for thus he complains about the causes that have led people to have control over him. Allah says in the Qur'an:

"Whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have committed. And He pardons much." [42:30]

"Whatever good befalls you is from Allah and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself..." [4:79] Both good and evil are destined by Allah. The good comes as Allah’s reward for good deeds, whereas the bad comes as Allah’s punishment for evil deeds. In some cases, bad things happen to good people to test their faith, or as an atonement for their sins, or as part of a process of replacing something with what is better (e.g., a job or a spouse).

The stages are thus three:
the most despicable is to complain about Allah to His creatures. The highest is to complain about oneself to Him (Allah). The middle one is to complain to Him (Allah) about His creatures.
