In this video we compare the new Leica M10-R against the Sony a7R III and the Fujifilm X-T3. One of the things I love about Leica cameras is the look of the images they produce. Cameras like Fujifilm are known for producing beautiful images and we decided to compare the Leica to Fuji and Sony to see what the differences were

Funny how unsharp your Summicron looks in this video... Something is wrong here.

Colorchecker was a nice touch to show the differences after full color correction, thanks for the video. Recently sold my m10 because I couldn't justify the cost but it was lovely to shoot.

I think u need to improve your technique in using a rangefinder; focusing and metering.

This video sold me onto Fujicrons more than anything else

Those first images of the girl are truly dreadful and the light flare is terrible. Also, what does it matter how the images come out of the camera ? I've never understood that with reviewers. 99% of images are going to be worked on in post and if you answer you don't want to spend too much time in post then you should do something else other than photography. At least 50% of a good photograph is and should be in post. And a great image is always worth the time and effort. Sorry matey but after that first set of images I really couldn't carry on as any credibility you had up to then (and your presentation is really good) totally vanished.

6:40 - I don't think it was a sharpness issue; I think it was slightly misfocused, which is easily done on a rangefinder of course.

I have too much time on my hands if I’m commenting on these videos, but comparing the photos of the model’s upper body and face, the Sony, and especially the Fuji, look immeasurably better than the Leica. There are unsightly flare lines across the model’s face in both Leica photos that do not appear in either the Sony or Fuji photos. And I have to agree with others who have said the focusing with the Leica seems off. I have the Leica Q (and the Fuji X-H1) and, properly focused, the Leica is much sharper than the photos in this comparison.

Keep it up! Anyone worried about the relative sharpness need not. Haven’t we all observed the trend of digital photographers clawing for vintage lenses suddenly because seeing a model’s soul in LR isn’t so appealing? Film photographers like me have because the competition is boosting prices 😂. Sharpness isn’t everything. Leica is not in my price range but holding a M3 for a few minutes was quite the experience. If renting film bodies were an option, I would do a short project with a M2 and 35mm lens. Alas, I will hang on to my trusty Nikon FM and 50mm Ais. She has never failed me.

Man I loved seeing the differences. For me the Fuji images had the most commercial viable look but the Leica was beautifully dreamy and classy. Character. Those backgrounds blew me away.

Thanks for having a brave and honest opinion and sharing it in a compelling way. As a Fuji shooter I feel inspired.

Good review + brought back fond memories of working and going out in Leeds. I’ve just shifted to Leica after some enjoyable years shooting Fuji Xpro1 and more recently Xpro2. I picked up a SL for the same price as a new Fuji Xpro3 and so far so good. The principal advantage is the viewfinder for focusing manual lenses, particularly some cheap but good vintage lenses which are less suitable for use on a crop sensor. For me the SL presents a nice middle way + the JPEGs and RAW files have a very nice look to them when compared with the Fuji, especially in Photoshop (Capture One was just frustrating for me). There is one thing I’ve found though, the Leica is less forgiving, where as the Fuji produces consistently good shots with less effort, so for quick paid work the Fuji is still great, but for enjoyment of the craft, Leica is special. So I think a second test is in order, see if Dale Photographic will lend you an SL, but be warned, you won’t want to give it back.

Fuji has more than just knobs and dials.
It’s dr400 mode directly addresses the problem of blown highlights in digital cameras, moving about 3-5 stops of DR from the shadows to the highlights!

Wtf is wrong with your summicron lens... it’s a quite sharp lens... Leica is all about lenses, they have very good micro contrast and contrast. Honestly, your need to calibrate your camera with the lens if you think that Fuji lens is sharper.

Completely agree with your opinion regarding the colors. Leica looks so organnic and vivid, just right.

I have my leica M10r with the 50mm sumilux and I can say this is better than anything I have ever used. I sure can't wait for Covid to sod off! Thank you for this review 🙏

The leica was warm, flat and muddy looking to my eyes in all of these. If you’re into that trendy look of crushed greens, and people are, then that’s spot on for you.

The Sony colors look like trash, and the Fuji leans cold but pulling Fuji images into Lightroom isn’t what they were meant to do. The in camera rendering, or rendering using Fuji raw studio will get you the best rendering.

Nice video. I remember seeing your video "How To Get Medium Format Colours With Full Frame" where you used a ColorChecker Passport to make a profile but I wonder have you ever made a profile with the ColorChecker Digital SG?

Thanks Usman, another good and interesting video. I have heard or read of anyone else reporting softness in their images. Would an APO lens be sharper I wonder? Could it have been slightly out of focus? Did you try focusing with a. Visoflex? I know you checked with Leica and I trust you tried everything it the image softness just seems a bit odd.

Interesting review - as for the discomfort holding the Leica, I can say that if I carried mine around without a strap for a while it would probably get a bit uncomfortable!

But anyway, I've never liked Sony colors either. Fuji colors are very nice - I really like Fuji for things other than people (city and landscapes, for example). Their color film is the same way. I do really like the M10 color for everything. The Leica Q color always needed a boost in LR but I think Leica really got it right in the newer M cameras.

I really preferred the Fuji images overall. I don't get the "dreaminess" aspect. The Leica photos seem to be a little bit brighter in the exposure and had more saturated colors. However, I don't like the soft focus of the Leica for the most part. But as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Great video!

I use an M10-D (without a screen) for my professional work. I was nervous at first but once you get good and confident you can shoot it and get great images in focus. I shoot with a 50mm 1.4 as well. Usually i stop it around f2 but i will give my clients some at f1.4 and they are blown away by the look of the camera and lens.
