Early echoics! The ability to echo the sounds and words of others is a crucial step to developing more complex language skills, such as mands! Mands (requests) are the first verbal operant acquired by children and initially take the form of crying (diaper change, hungry, bored). However, over time children soon replace crying with language. Finally, most problem behavior is a communication deficit, so the more language we can give our children, the less problem behavior they will have.
