As an avid guitar player, I agree and disagree. While your hands and fingers play a role in tone in ways such as vibrato, mutes, harmonics etc. your hands cannot create distortion, delay, reverb or chorus. You won't sound like David Gilmour with a crunchy metal distortion but with the right effects you can get pretty damn close.

My tone is on my guitar. It's a knob that a lot of people don't use ;) Fingers, experience, gear, ears, all make tone.

I had, to me, the perfect tone once. Meaning - it was the tone I was searching for all that year. It was an amphitheater stage back in 2007. Everything lined up, my amp was able to be cranked, my fingers weren't hungover or overly caffeinated, and we had to play at around 10am after driving straight 11 hours to New Mexico from our previous gig around Ventura, Ca. Not sure why I remember that now.

If you gave me SRV's rig or Clapton's rig once I started playing I would eventually start changing everything because even with the those rigs my playing would not sound like either of them. Tone for me is this endless search for a sound that's in my head that's perfect and only I can hear or realize it and if you asked me what it sounds like I'd have to tell you that I don't really know but I'll know it when I hear it. I would say that in my journey of playing guitar for 25+ years I'm about 45-50% there and no closer. I would also say that almost all of that for me is touch.

I hope you all find you tone someday but like some of them said it's a journey without end so just enjoy the journey. (and by journey I mean the band. Don't Stop Believing!)
