Janice P. Nimura, whose book “The Doctors Blackwell” was a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize, gave an online talk hosted by Finger Lakes Community College on Thursday, March 2, 2023.
The full title of Nimura’s book is “The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine.” It tells the story of Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell, who founded the first hospital staffed entirely by women. British native Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree in 1849. Her sister, Emily, followed her example and earned a medical degree in 1854.
Nimura’s visit was part of the History, Culture and Diversity series organized by Robert Brown, professor of history.
