This opening going from logos to a summary that's a holographic lesson inside a program inside archived footage is always so impressive, and then the one-shot from the cockpit to the cargo bay of top of that...one of the best movie openings ever, no question

One of the best opening sequences that I’ve seen in a sci-fi film. A ton of exposition but also you get how dramatic this escape really was. Simon had some big turnips to pull this off.

Slight retcon here -- if I recall right, originally Simon just intercepted River's delivery when she was being packaged off to God knows where; he didn't storm the base and rescue her himself.


I guess they made that change to quickly get new audience members up to speed.

My favorite moment is when Simon says "Yes, she always did love to dance, " the scientist gives him a weird look just before he knocks them all unconscious.

In Firefly, Simon seems to be clueless re what they wanted River for, and chocked at the idea that she was trained to be a weapon, but in this scene he was basically told that was the case. Small inconsistency.

I thought this was a flashback and was giving him an evil backstory....

Does anyone else have an issue with this scene in that, in the first episode, Simon explains to the rest of the crew that he paid a smuggling crew to break River out of the facility and then he met with that crew on the planet they were just on where they handed her off to him. But in this scene, they show Simon breaking her out of the facility himself.

Also, in this scene, they show the scientists explaining to Simon exactly what they are doing to River. But there's an entire episode where they have to break into a hospital so that Simon can find out what they did to her. Why would they have to do that if the scientists already explained to him what they did to her? Simon literally says in this scene, "What good is a psychic?" He had no notion of her psychic abilities until literally the last episode.

The tail end here is quite telling. River is the nutcase, but she's got the training and presence of mind to crouch down, lowering her center of gravity for more stability, while her fancy doctor brother just stands there, making everything less stable.
