I used phylogenetic trees in my dissertation and my supervisor actually didn't teach us the terminology so thank you

I am sorry, but there seems to be a misunderstanding related to symplesiomorphy. The hair on the Leopard is an apomorphy (namely an autapomorphy) and not a symplesiomorphy. The Amniotic egg for example would be a Symplesiomorphy for the Turtle and the Leopard in the cladogram (4:33) if approached from that Clade. It would be a Symapomorphy if approached from the rest of the cladogram.

For a GCSE level video, try my evolutionary tree video - with my digital illustrations and questions. Any feedback is much appreciated! @

How to interpret phylogenetic trees: Use SpongeBob imagination and imagine that separately created animals are related to each other.

Your efforts are appreciated. But my suggestion is not to use pre-illustrated images in your explanations as we can find them everywhere. You are telling your concept and you want to take us with you so it is better you use your own diagrams or images. Also, when you will draw while explaining, you are actually taking us step by step. One more thing, its better not to use Alphabets as taxon but real-life examples as you did in the last image. Thanks again for the video.

What if the root is not present?? That confuses me

So do A and B make up one clade or are they separate clades?

This is incorrect. The vertical column is a synapomorphic trait because its present in the MRCA and all its descendants. The hair is an autapomorphic trait because its unique to the leopard. You guys got the definition wrong. Other than that, good vid.
